September marks the end of the grape season, beginning of autumn, and now is the time to enjoy the famous wine harvest festival.

The exact date of the harvest depends on the maturity of the grape (its levels of sugar, acidity, tanins).  Winemakers make the decision of the type of grape with which they will produce the wine.

This year we celebrate the wine harvest festival at Bodega Faelo in Elche, Alicante.  This winery maintains the ancient tradition in the production of their wines.  Upon arrival we are happily surprised as we learn we will be able to participate in traditional grape treading where we will get to step on the grapes!

After treading or “dancing” on the grapes we help aid the process of extracting the must or juice.  Traditionally grape treading was common to extract the juice and begin the fermentation process.

We were lucky to be able to eat grapes directly from the grape vines.  Monastrell, chardonney, y cabernet sauvignon are a few grape varieties with which this winery produces their wines.

We were around a lively group of people made up of families and young and old, live music, wine and tapas of which made this wine harvest a total unique experience and PARTY.
