How to make homemade masks for coronavirus

Since the mandatory use of masks has been decreed for the entire population, we want you to be able to make your own mask in a safe way.

There was a time when acquiring this type of product was an almost impossible mission, or at least getting a lot at a reasonable price. For this reason, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Consumption has prepared a document with simple instructions so that anyone can make a mask at home. However, it warns that these homemade masks or homemade face masks are not indicated for people infected with coronavirus or who have to be with patients who are infected.

How to make masks to protect yourself from Covid-19

We are going to tell you about the design, materials and manufacture of these masks according to the indications of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Consumption.

– Must cover nose, mouth and chin.

– It must consist of filter material.

– You must ensure a proper fit with the face so that there is no leakage.

– The elastic bands can be replaced by straps to tie.

Non-woven fabric (TNT: textile non-tissé) conventional 50-60 g / m2 or Thickness: 0.3-0.5 mm. They are made up of filaments of different plastics depending on their purpose. One of those used for cures is the mixture of 50% viscose 50% polyester.

One of the important characteristics for this case is its absorption power. TNT is currently used for many applications; for example, dressing gauze and, if sterilized, as surgical gauze.

They are also used in containment diapers. For this reason, using conventional TNT gauze we know that the material is biocompatible with healthy skin of people, so it would not cause damage in prolonged use.

As an alternative to this product, the Ministry recommends the use of:

– The TNT 50% viscose-50% polyester, which has this characteristic guaranteed.

– Or for example: 40g / m2; 100% hydrophobic polypropylene spunbond (2 layers) (outer part of the mask); 44 g / m2; 80% Polyester / 20% Viscose Spunlace (2 layers); 20 g / m2; 100% Hydrophobic polypropylene spunbond (1 layer) (Inner part of mask).

This hygienic mask would be composed of a folded layer for contact with the skin of the person and another extended outer part. The set can be sewn or heat sealed, and then two ribbons of elastic cotton or other material are added to hold it. The procedure would be as follows:

– Cutting of the flat pattern. Cutting the pattern can be done with cutting machines or manually.

– Bending can be done by bending machines or by hand.

– Sewn with standard sewing machines or heat sealing.

– Fastening hook on the ears, elastic or stitched material.

Creation of homemade masks with the use of other materials

Apart from these recommendations made by the Government, people have started to sew masks with all kinds of materials such as cotton combined with pharmacy soaps, kitchen paper or others.

Here’s a pdf for you to use as a template on a 100% cotton T-shirt (most are):

It takes only 1 minute to create this mask and it is very easy to do. Although there are already other ideas with paper and wipes, these are more resistant and can be washed and reused, it is recommended that the shirt be 100% cotton, and the thicker the better. For that we can also cut the shirt, following this pattern, in a double way. That is, with the front part of the shirt, together with the back part, you make the cut and thus you already have a double layer. In addition, from a shirt you can take several masks, and make them of different colors

It is essential to put absorbent paper inside. That is why we recommend kitchen paper, since it is soft and very absorbent.

It should be clarified that this mask only acts as a physical barrier when coughing and speaking. Like “regular” surgical masks, they prevent to some extent the expelling of saliva particles and fluids. It can also be used to prevent other droplets from reaching or splashing from outside. But as with the basic surgical masks that they sell and as experts say, they do not guarantee to be infected if it is NEARLY with infected people. This requires another type of more advanced filtering mask (FFP2-FFP3 according to experts).

We hope that this will help you in the case of not being able to have masks and thus do not miss a day trip around Alicante.
